The Third Annual Pill Box Pharmacies Pines 5K Pursuit was so much fun it could get a couch potato motivated! Runners, walkers and strollers totaling well over three hundred joined the festivities prior to the race beginning at The Shops at Pembroke Gardens, Sunday, April 1, 2012, the last day of the City of Pembroke Pines Annual Pines Day Fair and 52nd Celebration.

“There were no fools at the run, just running fools,” laughed Steven Pressman, owner of the Pill Box Pharmacy and sponsor of Pill Box 5K Pursuit. When asked what he thought about the April 1st April Fools date.

Participants checking in as early as 6:00am enjoyed donuts, bananas, drinks and began jamming to the sounds of Shane LeMar Entertainment. Runners took their mark at 7:30am for the 5K Race and Walk which was timed by Split Second Timing. “We were fortunate to partner with Duke Realty who provided the Shoppes of Pembroke Gardens location,” said Mary Jordan, Development Director for the Pembroke Pines Charter School System. “Their commitment to the community, along with the support of Jason’s Deli, The Cheesecake Factory and Starbucks, made this event the quality event participants expect from the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools and the Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League,” said Mary Jordan. “This is an important fundraiser for the Pembroke Pines Charter School system and the Pembroke Pines PAL Program and we look forward to seeing it grow each year,” said Dan Giustino, Pembroke Pines Police and PAL Board Member.

Not only did the crowd of one hundred and fifty guests enjoy dancing and the wonderful entertainment provided by Chris MacDonald and his Memories of Elvis Concert, they won terrific prizes as well. Celebrity dealers included Pembroke Pines Vice Mayor Iris Siple, Pembroke Pines Charter School Principals Ken Bass and Peter Bayer and Teacher Daryl Mahoney. The Pembroke Pines Charter School parents donated a variety of services and time as wait staff and bartenders.

“We have a wonderful and award winning school system, which is supported through the amazing fundraising efforts of our families,” concluded Jordan. East Elementary Campus parent Jeaneane (Jen) Swaby donated her services as event photographer representing her company www.ThruJensEyes.com.

Affirmative or Negative? On Wednesday, April 4th, gifted students from the West, Central, and FSU campuses met at the FSU Campus and competed against each other in a Debate Competition. To prepare for the debate, the students stayed after school and learned all about debate and the techniques of how to debate. The facilitators: Carolyn Bellot (FSU), Amy Dreilinger and Christine Ortis (Central), and Keren Surowitz (West) assisted the students in researching, proper debate strategies, and how to effectively debate through the conduction of mock debates. For the mock debates, the students were assigned either the affirmative or negative side of a topic and conducted the research based on the view point they were assigned. After conducting the research they debated against other students from their campus to practice and prepare. When the students entered the final debate, they all knew the topic, but did not know which side they would be speaking on. Therefore, they had to conduct research for sides of the argument as well as practice speaking to both sides. All of the students worked very hard for this competition and were eager to demonstrate their amazing debating skills. They gave convincing arguments citing research for both sides of the argument. All of the students did an outstanding job. The students from the FSU Campus, Hailey Landry, Ara Johnson, Jason Castillo, Ava Johnson, Zoe McGowan, and Sarah Lendzian, were the overall winners of the competition. from the FSU campus. Congratulations to all!

Michelle Sand, P.E. Coach at Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School - West Campus, 1680 SW 184th Avenue, Pembroke Pines, went the extra GREEN mile to motivate her students to jump rope for the heart this year! IF students raised $6,000 through jumping rope pledges, to benefit the American Heart Association, Sand would be SLIMED. Coach Sand will be slimed on Thursday, March 29th at 9:15a.m.!!!

The annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser and celebration took place on February 17th. “Our students were so motivated by the SLIME-Y goal,” laughed Sand. “The students were so excited about helping make a difference in the lives of people who have heart problems, our school ended up raising $6,387!” Ninety students raised $30 or more, so they will get to slime Sand, and “The top 10 fundraisers will get to slime me an additional time!” said Sand.

In the past Sand has been stuck to the side of her Gym office in her effort to motivate students to meet jumping rope goals for the American Heart Association. Sand is a great advocate for exercise, and “jumping rope is an excellent cardiovascular exercise”. “It is an exercise that our students enjoy and will help them to stay active and healthy for a lifetime,” continued Sand. “A nice thing about jumping rope is its non-competitiveness; students don’t feel intimidated, there are no winners or losers. If you’re jumping, you’re a winner!” concluded Sand.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Please help to keep our school safe by refraining from parking in the fire lane in front of the school, especially when picking up your child(ren) from aftercare or after school events. Cars parked in the fire lanes prevent emergency vehicles from assisting our school if necessary. It has also become a traffic hazard for drivers backing out of designated parking spaces and navigating through the parking lot. Please remember that parking in a fire lane may result in a citation from the Pembroke Pines Police Department. Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation.

We want to express our sincere gratitude to all who donated their time, items, and efforts to make our school wide garage sale a huge success. Our final tally exceeded $7,000.00, and we could not have made that amount without the help of the entire Charter community. Look forward to seeing you again next year!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

If you missed the FCAT Family Night Presentation, the presentations can be found below on the West Campus main page in the section labeled FCAT Presentations on the right pane. Please note that they will require Microsoft Power Point to run.

The Jaguar Knights Chess Team from Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus competed in the National Youth Action-East Tournament held in Miami. The Jaguar Knights took home the ninth-place trophy in the very competitive nail-biting competition. Twenty-one schools from New York to Florida competed in the kindergarten through ninth grade division. There were 101 players competing in the nine-round, two-day tournament.

In addition to the ninth-place trophy the Jaguar Knights placed very respectfully in the individual standings: Anuj Sood – 62nd, with four points; Vinay Chitepu – 70th with four points; Colin Web – 84th with two points; and Kyle Webb – 93rd, with one and a half points. “I am very proud of our players, especially considering the lack of experience on the part of some of our team!” said Sandi Lieber, the Chess Team Sponsor who teaches Intensive Reading to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.

The PPCMS-West Jaguar Knights Chess Club boasts thirty-six members. “We select our team based on interest, not ability – anyone can play in any tournament if they choose, regardless of his or her level of expertise,” said a very proud Lieber.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to help differently abled children experience the fair shows and attractions,” said Kimberly Scarola, Future Educators Advisor. Through their volunteer work the students gained firsthand experience in teaching and assisting students with special needs. “It was a heart-warming experience for our students. They demonstrated patience and kindness well beyond their years,” said Mari Soliman co-sponsor of the Builders club. “I am so proud of our PPCMS students.” Soliman and fellow teacher Piper Spencer are co-sponsors of the Builders Club. “There is an ongoing national shortage of teachers who are certified to work with special-needs students. Hopefully service activities like this one will ignite an interest in some of our students and help fulfill that need,” concluded Scarola.   Read More...

This annual event, recognizes and honors the exemplary achievements of students with disabilities. Created in 1999, the campaign is held in conjunction with Disability History and Awareness during the first two weeks of October.
